Build One Way Links by Pinging

What is pinging?

Pinging is a way of letting search engines know that you’ve created a new post, or updated an existing post on your blog. A ‘ping’ is a message sent to a ‘ping server’ notifying it that the blog has been updated with new content.

What is a ping server?

A ping server is a web-based service that accepts messages in the XML-RPC format. It uses the information in these XML-RPC messages to publish a list of blogs which have updated content. Some of these ping servers run their own blog search engines, and some propagate the information to a number of other ping servers and search engines.

How does pinging work?

Many blog publishing platforms, such as Wordpress, have a built-in pinging tool. In the case of Wordpress, pinging is turned on by default and pings go out to one ping server which updates several search engines.

You can also notify a ping server that you have updated content manually by going to their website and submitting your blog’s name and URL.

One popular ping server is PingOMatic, found at http://pingomatic.com/. When your blog pings PingOMatic it then notifies a number of search engines that your blog has been updated. Many of these search engines also have their own ping server as well.

These search engines can then update their listings with new content almost instantly. This of course will give you one-way backlinks to your blog from these search engines, many of which have a high Google PageRank.

4 things you should know about pinging

1. Only ping when you have updated content. Otherwise, your site might be blacklisted as a spam blog, also known as a splog.

2. If you tend to post to your blog and then re-write the post frequently you might want to make sure you only ping when you actually post new content, not on updates. If you are using Wordpress there are a few plugins that make sure that pings are only sent when a post is created. I use, and recommend MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer plugin. It’s free, but it does require registration to be activated.

3. It’s a good idea to ping several ping services, especially the ones that notify several search engines. Don’t overdo it though. Make sure that if you are pinging a niche search engine that your blog falls into the relevant niche.

4. Make sure that if a search engine is notified by a ping server you are already using that you don’t add that search engines own ping service to your list of servers to ping. Because blog spammers have abused ping servers if you are pinging a search engine multiple times your site might end up being blacklisted, and not appear in the search engines at all.

Thanks for the extra ping URLs. I had some but not all you suggest.

I started getting more traffic when I added the technorati pinging service to my list.

I hope adding Yahoo will also help. Google is the biggest search engine, but about 50% of the world uses something else, and in the number 2 position is Yahoo. It might help a lot to have both number 1 and number 2 listed.

@Home Office Organization – Sherri: It’s interesting to know that Technorati has boosted your traffic. I thought I had added Yahoo to the list, as well as Google. But after reading your comment I had a second look and realized that somehow part of my post got cut off and only one of the yahoo ping servers was showing. Lots of other services I listed were missing too. I’ve fixed it now.

I only added the Google Blogsearch ping server recently and noticed a boost of traffic from them.

This was fantastic information. Thanks for the tips!

Very informative post. thanks for all the links.

Wow ! Thanks for the list of ping sites. I didn’t know there were so many.

I’ve been searching on the net for sites that offer one way links & what better than Pinging sites. Thanks a lot for sharing

No problem. Another easy source of one way links is RSS aggregators – submit your RSS feed to them and you get links back every time you post to your blog.

Wordpress, pinging is turned on by default. But MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer SAYS Using WordPress Can Ban Your Blog From Ping Services & most of the ping sites are not working.

Yes The Wordpress default is to have pinging turned on, but there is only one ping server by default. However, it’s an aggregate ping service meaning that it pings several other services. And it’s true your blog can be blacklisted on Ping services due to ‘ping spamming’ even though you are not intentionally doing it. That’s where the Ping Optimizer plugin helps. At the time of writing this article I had gone through all the ping servers I listed to check that they were working and that the aggregate services didn’t all ping the same ping servers. I haven’t had time to update that list, but here’s a link to a list of ping servers that are manually checked and updated: WordPress Ping List

Now that Google has taken such a dim view for reciprocal linking, new and imaginative avenues for increasing the traffic for a site and having a higher PR have become so much more relevant. Correct me if I have understood wrong, but this Ping idea does seem to be a way forward in that direction

It’s interesting to know that Technorati has boosted your traffic.

Yes The Wordpress default is to have pinging turned on, but there is only one ping server by default.

That’s true there is only one ping server listed in the default installation of Wordpress, but it’s a meta-ping server. i.e. a ping server that notifies a number of other ping servers. In fact, the motto of http://www.pingomatic.com is “Pinging Search Engines, so you don’t have to!”. So the effect is still that you are ping multiple servers, every time you update a post. Fix a typo, update, ping again.

You have quite a collection of these ping lists, I’ve been using all the default features of WordPress, but your information is an eye-opener

Some of these listed do get me traffic back to my blog. The Google ping server especially.

Good News ^^

In everything in every way, I learn something new on the net. I’ve been blogging for some time, but your ping idea is truly interesting.

I do tend to update my post often enough. Its just an upgrading of the knowledge that has filtered in after the last post. Can this be construed as Ping spamming?

I found the technorati pinging service particularly useful. I do intend to test the other ping servers too. Thanks for the list.

I don’t know this method, because I don’t know how to use the ping, Thanks for your introduce,I had read it.

Can pinging actually help my blog generate more traffic?

@Sadekya Pinging can help generate traffic. Don’t expect too much from it, but I have definitely gotten traffic especially through Google’s blog search – which is in my ping list.

Great share. I’m using WP plugins to ping my post.

Can I place all the links in one of my blog as a new content, and ping that specific url blog? (to ping only once for all my links.) I find it a tedious task to actually ping ‘em one by one.
What do you think? — thanks for the list, btw.

@E-Recruitment what platform is your blog running off? If you’re using Wordpress you just add all the ping servers and Wordpress does the rest. Every time you post, Wordpress automatically sends the pings for you. All you have to do is login, go to Settings > Writing and scroll down to the bottom where you see “Update Services”. Paste all the ping servers from the list in there and click the “Save Changes” button. Next time you post to your blog Wordpress will ping all those servers for you.

If you’re hosting your own Wordpress blog, that is you pay for hosting, install the MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer plugin that I mention in the article. The link to it is in the article. It’s good if you make changes to your posts after publishing them. I explain more about that in the article above.

Thanks for your fast response Donna!! That’s exactly what I wanted to know. Great help.
:)

@E-Recruitment hey no problem, glad I could help! :-)

Thnax Donna too i like that thnax

This is great information. I didn’t know about pinging until I came to this site. Very informative!

Pinging site is very helpful. Thanks for sharing.

Could updating often enough and consequent pinging be construed as spam? I wonder…

Pinging can prove mighty useful if you have unique content or unique updation of content to go along.

@Plastic Cards: yes absolutely. I have gotten traffic directly back from pings after being picked up quickly by the ping servers.
