Now unless you went out and purchased someone else&#8217;s blog chances are your blog launched with only one very loyal reader - you. Maybe a few days later you received a few hits when you told your sister, father, girlfriend and best friend about your new blog but that&#8217;s about as far you went when it comes to finding readers.Here are the<strong> top 10 techniques new bloggers can use to find readers</strong>.<span id="more-75"></span></p>
<p>These are tips specifically for new bloggers, those people who have next-to-no audience at the moment and want to get the ball rolling.</p>
<p>It helps if you work on this list from top to bottom as each technique builds on the previous step to help you create momentum. Eventually once you establish enough momentum you gain what is called &#8220;traction&#8221;, which is a large enough audience base (about 500 readers a day is good) that you no longer have to work too hard on finding new readers. Instead your current loyal readers do the work for you through word of mouth.</p>
<h2>Top 10 Tips</h2>
<p>10. <strong>Write at least five major &#8220;pillar&#8221; articles.</strong> A pillar article is usually a tutorial style article aimed to teach your audience something. Generally they are longer than 500 words and have lots of very practical tips or advice. This article you are currently reading could be considered a pillar article since it is very practical and a good &#8220;how-to&#8221; lesson. This style of article has long term appeal, stays current (it isn&#8217;t news or time dependent) and offers real value and insight. The more pillars you have on your blog the better.</p>
<p>9. <strong>Write one new blog post per day minimum.</strong> Not every post has to be a pillar, but you should work on getting those five pillars done at the same time as you keep your blog fresh with a daily news or short article style post. The important thing here is to demonstrate to first time visitors that your blog is updated all the time so they feel that if they come back tomorrow they will likely find something new. This causes them to bookmark your site or subscribe to your blog feed.</p>
<p>You don&#8217;t have to produce one post per day all the time but it is important you do when your blog is brand new. Once you get traction you still need to keep the fresh content coming but your loyal audience will be more forgiving if you slow down to a few per week instead. The first few months are critical so the more content you can produce at this time the better.</p>
<p>8. <strong>Use a proper domain name.</strong> If you are serious about blogging be serious about what you call your blog. In order for people to easily spread the word about your blog you need an easily rememberable domain name. People often talk about blogs they like when they are speaking to friends in the real world (that&#8217;&#8217;s the offline world, you remember that place right?) so you need to make it easy for them to spread the word and pass on your URL. Try and get a .com if you can and focus on small easy to remember domains rather than worry about having the correct keywords (of course if you can get great keywords and easy to remember then you&#8221;ve done a good job!).</p>
<p>7. <strong>Start commenting on other blogs.</strong> Once you have your pillar articles and your daily fresh smaller articles your blog is ready to be exposed to the world. One of the best ways to find the right type of reader for your blog is to comment on other people&#8217;&#8217;s blogs. You should aim to comment on blogs focused on a similar niche topic to yours since the readers there will be more likely to be interested in your blog.</p>
<p>Most blog commenting systems allow you to have your name/title linked to your blog when you leave a comment. This is how people find your blog. If you are a prolific commentor and always have something valuable to say then people will be interested to read more of your work and hence click through to visit your blog.</p>
<p>6. <strong>Trackback and link to other blogs in your blog posts.</strong> A trackback is sort of like a blog conversation. When you write a new article to your blog and it links or references another blogger&#8217;s article you can do a trackback to their entry. What this does is leave a truncated summary of your blog post on their blog entry - it&#8217;s sort of like your blog telling someone else&#8217;s blog that you wrote an article mentioning them. Trackbacks often appear like comments.</p>
<p>This is a good technique because like leaving comments a trackback leaves a link from another blog back to yours for readers to follow, but it also does something very important - it gets the attention of another blogger. The other blogger will come and read your post eager to see what you wrote about them. They may then become a loyal reader of yours or at least monitor you and if you are lucky some time down the road they may do a post linking to your blog bringing in more new readers.</p>
<p>5. <strong>Encourage comments on your own blog.</strong> One of the most powerful ways to convince someone to become a loyal reader is to show there are other loyal readers already following your work. If they see people commenting on your blog then they infer that your content must be good since you have readers so they should stick around and see what all the fuss is about. To encourage comments you can simply pose a question in a blog post. Be sure to always respond to comments as well so you can keep the conversation going.</p>
<p>4. <strong>Submit your latest pillar article to a blog carnival.</strong> A blog carnival is a post in a blog that summarizes a collection of articles from many different blogs on a specific topic. The idea is to collect some of the best content on a topic in a given week. Often many other blogs link back to a carnival host and as such the people that have articles featured in the carnival enjoy a spike in new readers.</p>

<p>3. <strong>Submit your blog to <a href="http://blogtopsites.com" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">blogtopsites.com</a>.</strong> To be honest this tip is not going to bring in a flood of new readers but it&#8217;s so easy to do and only takes five minutes so it&#8217;&#8217;s worth the effort. Go to Blog Top Sites, find the appropriate category for your blog and submit it. You have to copy and paste a couple of lines of code on to your blog so you can rank and then sit back and watch the traffic come in. You will probably only get 1-10 incoming readers per day with this technique but over time it can build up as you climb the rankings. It all helps!</p>
<p>2. <strong>Submit your articles to <a href="http://ezinearticles.com" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">EzineArticles.com</a>.</strong> This is another tip that doesn&#8217;t bring in hundreds of new visitors immediately (although it can if you keep doing it) but it&#8217;s worthwhile because you simply leverage what you already have - your pillar articles. Once a week or so take one of your pillar articles and submit it to Ezine Articles. Your article then becomes available to other people who can republish your article on their website or in their newsletter.</p>
<p>How you benefit is through what is called your &#8220;Resource Box&#8221;. You create your own resource box which is like a signature file where you include one to two sentences and link back to your website (or blog in this case). Anyone who publishes your article has to include your resource box so you get incoming links. If someone with a large newsletter publishes your article you can get a lot of new readers at once.</p>
<p>1. <strong>Write more pillar articles.</strong> Everything you do above will help you to find blog readers however all of the techniques I&#8217;ve listed only work when you have strong pillars in place. Without them if you do everything above you may bring in readers but they won&#8217;t stay or bother to come back. Aim for one solid pillar article per week and by the end of the year you will have a database of over 50 fantastic feature articles that will work hard for you to bring in more and more readers.</p>

In addition to having good, relevant content on your site one of the best ways to increase your search ranking is to get high quality backlinks to your site.<span id="more-84"></span></p>
<p>Backlinks are hyperlinks placed on another website which link to your site. The most powerful backlinks are one-way backlinks. This means that another website has links pointing to your site, but you don&#8217;t have reciprocal links pointing back to theirs.</p>
<p>Using forums is a great way to get high quality one-way backlinks to your site. These links can generate direct traffic to your site, as people browsing the forum click your links in addition to raising your search engine ranking. But you have to be careful when using forums in this way. Do it wrong and you will be branded a spammer and most likely get your forum account closed. But if done correctly, forums can be a very powerful tool in your traffic generation arsenal.</p>
<h2>Step 1: Find relevant forums</h2>
<p>The key word here is &#8216;relevant&#8217;. You want to be sure to find forums related to your niche - the topic of your website. The easiest way to do this is to go to Google and type in your topic along with the the word &#8216;forum&#8217;. Let&#8217;s say you have a blog on coin collecting. You&#8217;d type this into Google:</p>

<p>There are two reasons you want to find forums related to your niche. First, the search engines will usually give more weight to links pointing to your site if they come from sites centered around the same niche as your site. Secondly, you&#8217;ll get much more direct traffic from a forum where the members are interested in your niche.</p>
<h2>Step 2: Pick the best forums and join them</h2>
<p>Now that you have found some forums you need to check them out and choose which ones to join. Click the links to visit about half a dozen of the top search results. Most forums will allow you to view the content without having to join, it&#8217;s only when you want to start posting that you have to register. If you land on a forum that won&#8217;t let you view unless you join, forget it and move on.</p>
<p>When looking for a forum to join you want to find ones that are popular, so look for those with a decent number of members. You also need to make sure those members are active. Go into one of the more popular forums categories and scan down the list of threads to see when the last posting was made. This information is usually in the right hand column of the forum threads table. If you see a lot of posts made in the last 24 hours, you&#8217;ve found a forum with lots of active members. With the content changing this often, the search engines should be all over that forum, which means that your links will get picked up quickly. Search engines tend to love sites with lots of frequently updated, relevant content. This is the type of forum you want to join.</p>
<p>Now there is just one more step before joining. You need to make sure this forum allows you to have a &#8217;signature&#8217;. Jump into one of the more popular threads on the forum. Scroll down and look at the posts to see if anyone has a signature showing at the bottom of their post. There will usually be a horizontal line after the body of the post and some text and/or links underneath it. Often people just have a quote or witty saying, but sometimes they will have links as well. Not everyone will have a signature, but try to find some members who do. Signatures are crucial, because this is where you are going to put the links to your site.</p>
<p>When you find a forum that meets the criteria, follow the steps to register and confirm your membership. If you find just three or four forums that&#8217;s plenty to start with.</p>
<h2>Step 3: Set up your signature</h2>
<p>After you login to the forum you should see a link to your user profile. Often this will be called &#8216;User CP&#8217; or &#8216;User Profile&#8217;. In the user profile area you can edit things like your avatar, your bio and preferences. Look for a link that says something like &#8216;Edit signature&#8217; and click that. You&#8217;ll see a text field where you can type in the text you want to appear beneath all your posts. This is where you&#8217;ll put the backlinks to your site.</p>
<p>Forums use a special kind of code to allow members to format their posts. It&#8217;s called BBCode and it&#8217;s quite simple to use once you get the hang of it. Copy the examples below and change the URL and text to your URL and some catchy keyword-rich text. Paste the code into you signature box and save it.</p>

<p>You can see in the code above where you need to edit the domain to be your domain. In this example, &#8216;Coin Collecting&#8217; will be the anchor text for the link. This is where you want to put your keywords. Almost all forums will allow you to have a link in your signature.</p>
<p>If you want to make your signature bold, just add the bold tags around it like this:</p>

<p>Most forums will allow you to bold the text in your signature. If you add the bold code and your signature still doesn&#8217;t come out in bold then it&#8217;s you know the bold formatting is not allowed.</p>
<p>Some forums will also allow you to change the color of the text, although the anchor text will come out as the default link color, usually blue. Here&#8217;s how you change the text color:</p>

<p>You can also combine formatting. This would make your signature red and bold (except for the link text which will usually be blue bold).</p>

<p>One final tip for creating your signature. Less is more. If you make your signature look spamming people will treat you like a spammer. You don&#8217;t have to use up all available lines in your signature. Make it short, sweet and to the point. If you post great content and people are interested they will click your link.</p>
<h2>Step 4: Participate!</h2>
<p>The first three steps were all preparation. Now you get to start creating backlinks to your site! It&#8217;s simple, just participate in the forum. Post good content, ask questions. Try to help people out by answering questions. Be nice, be helpful.</p>
<p>Every post you make will give you a backlink to your site. The higher the quality of your post, the more powerful your backlink will be, at least in Google. Because Google looks at the text surrounding a link to determine the relevancy of a link having good content in your posts is much more valuable than having a post that says something like, &#8220;great post, I agree&#8221;. If you simply participate in the forum and try to be friendly and helpful chances are your content will take care of itself.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s it. Have fun. And remember, you can change your signature any time you want. You might changing the text a bit from time to time to find out what generates the most clicks through to your site.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There are basically two types of bloggers in the world - reporters and experts - and some people perform both roles (usually the experts, it’s hard for reporters to become experts, but it’s easy for experts to report).<span id="more-68"></span></p>
<p>If you have ever taken an Internet marketing course or attended a seminar specifically for beginners, you have probably heard about the two different methodologies. Whenever the business model is based on content, and if you blog for money then the model is based on content, people are taught to either start as reporters, or if possible step up as experts.</p>
<p>I’ll be frank; you want to be the expert.</p>
<p>Reporters leverage the content of the experts and in most cases people start off as reporters because they haven’t established expertise. Experts enjoy the perks of preeminence, higher conversion rates because of perceived value, it’s easier to get publicity, people are more likely to seek you out rather than you having to seek others out, joint ventures come easier, etc… experts in most cases simply make more money and attract more attention.</p>
<h2>Most Bloggers Are Reporters</h2>
<p>The thing with expertise is that it requires something - experience. No person becomes an expert without doing things and learning. Bloggers usually start out without expertise and as a result begin their blogging journey by talking about everything going on in their niche (reporting) and by interviewing and talking about other experts (reporting again).</p>
<p>There’s nothing wrong with reporting of course and for many people it’s a necessity at first until you build up some expertise. Unfortunately the ratios are pretty skewed when it comes to reporters and experts - there are a lot more reporters than there are experts, hence reporters tend to struggle to gain attention and when they do, they often just enhance the reputation of the expert they are reporting on.</p>
<h2>Don’t Replicate Your Teacher</h2>
<p>If you have ever spent some time browsing products in the learn Internet marketing niche you will notice a pattern. Many people first study Internet marketing from a “guru” (for lack of a better term). The guru teaches how he or she is able to make money online, and very often the view that the student gleams is that in order to make money online you have to teach others how to make money online.</p>
<p>The end result of this process is a huge army of amateurs attempting to replicate what their teacher does in the same industry - the Internet marketing industry - not realizing that without expert status based on a proven record and all the perks that come with it, it’s next to impossible to succeed.</p>
<p>Even people, who enjoy marginal success, say for example growing an email list of 1,000 people, then go out and launch a product about how to grow an email list of 1,000 people. Now I have no problems with that, I think it’s fine to teach beginners and leverage whatever achievements you have, the problem is that people gravitate to the same niche - Internet marketing - and rarely have any key points of differentiation.</p>
<p>How many products out there do you know of that all claim to teach the same things - email marketing, SEO, pay per click, affiliate marketing, and all the sub-niches that fall under the category of Internet marketing. It’s a saturated market, yet when you see your teachers and other gurus making money teaching others how to make money (and let’s face it - making money as a subject is one of the most compelling) - your natural inclination is to follow in their footsteps.</p>
<p>If the key is to become an expert and you haven’t spent the last 5-10 years making money online, I suggest you look for another niche to establish expertise in.</p>
<h2>Report on Your Process, Not Others</h2>
<p>The secret to progress from reporter to expert is not to focus on other experts and instead report on your own journey. When you are learning how to do something and implementing things day by day, or studying other people’s work, you need to take your process and what you do as a result of what you learn, and use it as content for your blog.</p>
<p>It’s okay to talk about experts when you learn something from them, but always relate it to what you are doing. If you learn a technique from an expert it’s fine to state you learned it from them (and affiliate link to their product too!) but you should then take that technique, apply it to what you are doing and then report back YOUR results, not there’s. Frame things using your opinion - your stories - and don’t regurgitate what the expert said. The key is differentiation and personality, not replication.</p>
<p>Expertise comes from doing things most people don’t do and then talking about it. If you do this often enough you wake up one day as an expert, possibly without even realizing how it happened, simply because you were so good at reporting what you did.</p>
<h2>You Are Already An Expert</h2>
<p>Most people fail to become experts (or perceived as experts) because they don’t leverage what they already know. Every person who lives a life learns things as they go, takes action every day and knows something about something. The reason why they never become an expert is because they choose not to (which is fine for some, not everyone wants to be an expert), but if your goal is to blog your way to expertise and leave the world of reporting behind you have to start teaching and doing so by leveraging real experience.</p>
<p>Experience can come from what you do today and what you have done previously; you just need to take enough steps to demonstrate what you already know and what you are presently learning along your journey. I know so many people in my life, who are experts simply by virtue of the life they have lived, yet they are so insecure about what they know, they never commit their knowledge to words for fear of…well fear.</p>
<p>Blogs and the Web in general, are amazing resources when you leverage them as a communication tool to spread your expertise because of the sheer scope of people they can reach. If all you ever do is talk to people in person and share your experience using limited communication mediums, you haven’t much hope of becoming an expert. Take what you know and show other people through blogging, and you might be surprised how people change their perception of you in time.</p>
<h2>Reporting Is A Stepping Stone</h2>
<p>If your previous experience and expertise is from an area you want to leave behind or you are starting from “scratch”, then reporting is the path you must walk, at least for the short term.</p>
<p>Reporting is a lot of fun. Interviewing experts, talking about what other people are doing and just being part of a community is not a bad way to blog. In many cases people make a career of reporting (journalism is about just that), but if you truly want success and exponential results, at some point you will have to stand up and proclaim yourself as someone unusually good at something and then proceed to demonstrate it over and over again.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Even though I&#8217;m a natural idea generator I find myself getting stuck all too often when it comes to writing to my blog. If you have a blog, especially if you want to someday make money from it, it&#8217;s essential that you write frequently and consistently. But what do you do when you sit down at your keyboard and realize you have no idea what to write about?<span id="more-62"></span></p>
<p>I know there are exercises you can do to break through writer&#8217;s block. I&#8217;ve tried them in the past, but most just don&#8217;t work for me. They seem too contrived, it feels like a chore. I want to just sit down and let the words flow - sometimes it works like that. But I&#8217;ve had to find workarounds for the times when writer&#8217;s block takes hold.</p>
<p>Here are my top 3 tips for generating writing ideas:</p>
<h3><strong>Be prepared when ideas do come</strong></h3>
<p>Ideas often come when you&#8217;re not trying to generate them, it&#8217;s just the way our brains work. Do you get your best ideas when you&#8217;re in the shower? Or driving? Maybe, like me, you work things out in your dreams and then wake up with a great idea&#8230; which dissolves into the ether as soon as my dogs pounce on me.</p>
<p>The trick is to capture these ideas, so you&#8217;ll have them when you need them. When you run dry, you can look back through your captured ideas and use one of them, or maybe just reading through them will kickstart you into generating more ideas.</p>
<p>To capture ideas in the moment, be sure to have a pen/pencil and notebook with you or near you at all times to jot down ideas as you get them. Don&#8217;t censor anything. Even if you realize later an idea wasn&#8217;t so great, it may end up triggering more ideas that are brilliant.</p>
<p>If you are working on a computer with Internet access (maybe at your day job) and don&#8217;t want to stop to grab your notebook, you can use a web-based service like <a href="http://evernote.com/" target="_blank">Evernote</a> to capture your ideas, then sync them down to your home computer later on. Evernote is web-based, with handy clipping applications for your browser, and desktop software for both Macs and PCs.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re driving and can&#8217;t stop to take notes, Evernote is also available for iPhone and iPod Touch, so you can record a note to yourself. Otherwise you can use digital recorders or an mp3 player which records.</p>
<h3><strong>Write about what people are searching for</strong></h3>
<p>Everyone who comes to your blog through search engines is&#8230; well, searching for something. But just because they found your blog doesn&#8217;t mean they necessarily found what they were looking for. And if they didn&#8217;t - well, there&#8217;s a topic for an article you could write. <a href="http://www.hittail.com/">Hittail</a> is a free web service that tracks visitors coming to your site through search engines and analyzes the keywords they used to give you suggestions of topics you can write about. I&#8217;ve found the algorithms they use to analyze keywords and come up with suggestions give quite decent results.</p>
<p>Using HitTail on your Wordpress blog is easy. First, sign up for a free account at HitTail. Add your blog URL, and copy the code that you&#8217;ll need to add to your site. Now go get the free <a href="http://chaos-laboratory.com/2007/03/12/tailhitter-wordpress-plug-in-for-automatic-insertion-of-hittail-code-in-all-posts-pages-of-your-blog/">TailHitter plugin</a>, upload it to your wp-content/plugins folder. Login to your Wordpress admin area and activate the TailHitter plugin. Then go to &#8216;Settings&#8217;, click on the &#8216;TailHitter&#8217; link and paste the HitTail code into the text box and click the &#8216;Update&#8217; button. That&#8217;s it!</p>

Now that you know what people in your niche are looking for you can write articles based around these topics in order to capture and retain a share of the search engine traffic. Once you&#8217;ve completed an article based on Hittail&#8217;s suggestion, keep track of what you&#8217;ve done by ticking the box next to the keywords in the To Do list.</p>
<h3><strong>Ask your readers</strong></h3>
<p>Find out what your readers want to know, write articles that answer their questions. There are many ways you can open this dialog with your readers. But one of the quickest and easiest methods is to use <a href="http://skribit.com/">Skribit</a>.   Sign up for Skribit (it&#8217;s free) and copy the code they give you. Paste the code into a text widget, and add the widget to your sidebar. Now you&#8217;ll have a widget sitting in your sidebar that asks, &#8220;What should I write about?&#8221;. Your readers can, in 100 characters or less submit their question or suggestion.</p>
<p>Have a look in my sidebar and you&#8217;ll see Skribit in action.                 Give it a try, let me know what you would like me to write about. Readers can vote on suggestions that have already been submitted by someone else.</p>
<p>When you do write about something from your Skribit suggestions you can let people know you wrote about their topic. This not only helps you break through your writers block, but your readers get answers to their questions, and because you can notify them that you&#8217;ve blogged on their question you have a way of drawing people back to your site.</p>

<p>I was especially taken by the explanation of &#8216;ambient intimacy&#8217;. It&#8217;s key! This is the thing that hooks people on Social Media sites. I&#8217;ve never seen marketers talking about this. Although I believe Ed Dale hinted at it during the <a href="http://www.thirtydaychallenge.com">30 Day Challenge</a> in the video where he introduced <a href="http://www.richardink.com/">Richard Ink</a> - Richard, an artist, is a natural at developing ambient intimacy. So marketers aren&#8217;t talking about it, but it&#8217;s key to successful marketing through social media. This is where you have a chance to build trust, through familiarity.</p>

<p>Search engine optimization (SEO) is a collection of techniques that can be applied to a website to increase the search engine ranking of the site. Search engine ranking is the position that your site occupies when a search is done using keywords you are targeting on your site. Note that in this article I&#8217;m only advocating <strong>ethical search engine optimization techniques</strong>, also known as &#8220;white hat&#8221; SEO. In the long run that&#8217;s the only type of SEO that you will benefit from.<span id="more-43"></span></p>
<h2>Why is search engine ranking important?</h2>
<p>The higher your site&#8217;s position in the search engine results pages (SERPs) the more people will see it and potentially click on your listing, bringing you more traffic. Google, one of the most popular search engines, list 10 search results per page. Most searchers never look beyond the first page of search results. SEO is important because if you can get your site listed in the Google top ten for your search terms you will get significantly more traffic than if your listing shows up on any subsequent pages. This kind of traffic is also known as <em>organic search engine traffic</em>. All the tips below are <strong>organic search engine optimization techniques</strong></p>
<p>SEO techniques fall under two broad categories, on-page factors and off-page factors.</p>
<h3>On Page SEO</h3>
<p>On page factors are all the things you can do on your website to increase SEO. The on page factors usually revolve around keywords, and you use these techniques to let the search engines know what you site is about. On page factors include things like the use of keyword and description meta tags, the use of the alt tag for images, HTML header tags, keyword placement, etc.</p>
<h3>Off Page SEO</h3>
<p>Off page factors revolve around backlinks, but also involve the use of keywords. Backlinks are the links placed on other sites that point to you site. Backlinks are also known as &#8220;inbound links&#8221;, a term which is often easier to understand. Inbound links are those links pointing towards your site.</p>
<h2>Steps You Can Take To Improve Your SEO</h2>
<p><strong>1. Always use keyword and description meta tags.</strong><br />
For every page on your site you should have meta tags unique to that page. Meta tags are HTML code found between the tags near the top of the page when you are looking at the HTML code. There&#8217;s a good reference for using meta tags here: <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.freelancedesigners.com/tools/meta_tags.cfm">http://www.freelancedesigners.com/tools/meta_tags.cfm</a></p>
<p>For the keywords meta tag create a comma-separated list of keywords relevant to your site. Keywords don&#8217;t have to be single words. They can, and should, be keyword phrases relevant to the content of that page.</p>
<p>For the description meta tag, write a description of your site that would make someone want to click your link. This meta tag&#8217;s description is used by some search engines, including Google, as the text description of your site. So it&#8217;s not just for the search engine&#8217;s benefit, it&#8217;s also likely to be seen by a human and it may be the difference between that human clicking on your site&#8217;s link or another site.</p>
<p><strong>2. Where you have images on your site, always include an alt tag.</strong><br />
The HTML code for including an image in your page has an optional attribute called the &#8216;alt&#8217; tag. It&#8217;s short for &#8216;alternative text&#8217;. It was originally intended as a text description to aid viewers surfing with images turned off or using a screen reader so they could get an idea of what an image was about, since they couldn&#8217;t see it. But search engines also use the alt tag to find out more about what your page is about.</p>
<p>You want the alt tag to contain keywords relevant to your site and the image they are describing. Instead of just putting &#8220;header&#8221; in the alt tag for your header image, use the opportunity to tell the search engines what your site is about, with something like &#8220;Puppy Training Header&#8221;, if your site is about puppy training. Don&#8217;t over do it though, you want this description to be concise rather than stuffed with every keyword relevant to your site. <p><strong>3. Use header tags wisely.</strong><br />
The header tags H1, H2, H3 etc. are used by search engines to figure out what the important keywords for your site are. You can easily change the appearance of the header tags by using stylesheets, so try to use the standard HTML header tags instead of custom styles for your headers. Then just make sure you&#8217;ve got relevant keywords in the headers. The H1 header should contain the primary keyword for your page, the H2 header should contain the secondary keywords for your page, etc.</p>
<p><strong>4. Get backlinks with relevant keywords.</strong><br />
Get backlinks. Lots of them. This should be an ongoing part of your SEO. The more backlinks the better, but you want to grow your backlinks naturally. It looks a lot more natural if you work on getting a handful of backlinks every week than if you suddenly got 10,000 backlinks overnight because you bought them from a link farm. The search engines are watching for these unnatural patterns, and you are likely to be penalized for engaging in such practices.</p>
<p>There are many ways to get backlinks. You can develop relationships with other webmasters to get traditional reciprocal links from other related sites. Participate in forums related to your topic and be sure to have a link to your site as part of your &#8217;signature&#8217;. Write articles for article directories which include a link back to your site in the &#8216;bio box&#8217;. Create Squidoo lenses or HubPages with, you guessed it, a link back to your site. If you have a blog submit your RSS feed to RSS Aggregator sites, and add it to your Squidoo lens or HubPage. Use Social Bookmarking services to bookmark your pages and encourage your visitors to do the same. Use Twitter to send out a &#8216;tweet&#8217; when you post a new article. This is just to get you started, it&#8217;s not an exhaustive list by any means.</p>
<p>Now that you have some ideas for where to get backlinks, it&#8217;s important that you choose good anchor text for your backlinks when you can. The anchor text is the text that turns into the hyperlink (it&#8217;s often blue, sometimes underlined). The search engines also use this text to figure out what your site, or page, is about. So where you can, specify what the anchor text will be. You want to use your main keywords, and variations on your main keywords. Try to vary it a little (that looks natural), while still keeping it relevant of course. Keep in mind that the keywords you use when you are linking to a specific page are not necessarily going to be the same as when you are linking to your homepage.</p>
<p>In some cases you don&#8217;t have the option of specifying the anchor text. But don&#8217;t miss the opportunity to specify it where you can. If you trade reciprocal links with another site, specify what you want your anchor text to be. The other webmaster will probably appreciate it because it saves them time having to decide what it should be. When you create Squidoo lenses and HubPages, or for your forum signatures you have total control over your anchor text. Use it wisely.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ve covered just a few basic, but very important, aspects of SEO in this article. This is a very good place to start if you want to improve your sites&#8217; organic search engine optimization. Keep applying these techniques until it becomes second nature and you should see an improvement in both your search engine rankings and an increase in the traffic to your site.</p>

<p>Pinging is a way of letting search engines know that you&#8217;ve created a new post, or updated an existing post on your blog. A &#8216;ping&#8217; is a message sent to a &#8216;ping server&#8217; notifying it that the blog has been updated with new content.<span id="more-39"></span></p>
<h3>What is a ping server?</h3>
<p>A ping server is a web-based service that accepts messages in the XML-RPC format. It uses the information in these XML-RPC messages to publish a list of blogs which have updated content. Some of these ping servers run their own blog search engines, and some propagate the information to a number of other ping servers and search engines.</p>
<h3>How does pinging work?</h3>
<p>Many blog publishing platforms, such as Wordpress, have a built-in pinging tool. In the case of Wordpress, pinging is turned on by default and pings go out to one ping server which updates several search engines.</p>
<p>You can also notify a ping server that you have updated content manually by going to their website and submitting your blog&#8217;s name and URL.</p>
<p>One popular ping server is PingOMatic, found at http://pingomatic.com/. When your blog pings PingOMatic it then notifies a number of search engines that your blog has been updated. Many of these search engines also have their own ping server as well.</p>
<p>These search engines can then update their listings with new content almost instantly. This of course will give you one-way backlinks to your blog from these search engines, many of which have a high Google PageRank.</p>
