Social Media from an Artist’s Perspective

I’ve just read what may be the best article I’ve come across on Social Media. Written from an artist’s perspective, it has a genuine human element that makes a refreshing change from all the other articles I’ve read (written from a marketing perspective) which only seem to care about how to exploit the power of social media for your own gain.

I was especially taken by the explanation of ‘ambient intimacy’. It’s key! This is the thing that hooks people on Social Media sites. I’ve never seen marketers talking about this. Although I believe Ed Dale hinted at it during the 30 Day Challenge in the video where he introduced Richard Ink - Richard, an artist, is a natural at developing ambient intimacy. So marketers aren’t talking about it, but it’s key to successful marketing through social media. This is where you have a chance to build trust, through familiarity.

What they were experiencing was something social scientists have called ” ambient intimacy” it is in essence similar to the feeling of closeness we have when we sit across the room from someone and watch their quirky mumblings, or gestures. Individually such actions have little meaning but lumped together over time they start adding up to a description of the person’s mood, their inner workings.

The article is part of a series focused on bringing artists into the 21st century and giving them the awareness of all the other possibilities for bringing their gifts to the world and at the same time changing the “starving artist” mindset into that of a thriving artist.

@Bill Weaver: It’s a great article Bill, and just what the artist’s community needs. Many artists may be hesitant to embrace the Internet, but the ones that do will benefit enormously from both the social interaction with other artists and exposing their art to people who otherwise would never have the opportunity to experience it. I think what you’re doing is going to benefit many!
