Wordpress 2.8

Wordpress 2.8 has just been released a short time ago. A ‘release candidate’ has been available for a few days now, with testers and developers working to squash any remaining bugs.

The official release version is now out. Updating to the latest version is recommended, but beware… at least on the site I’ve updated so far the upgrade made all my widgets disappear. So take note of what you’ve got and where because you may have to add them again. I’ve also seen recommendations to deactivate all your plugins before installing. I didn’t have a problem with plugins on the two sites I’ve updated so far, but it’s still worth doing if others have had problems with it. It could be that some plugins break under this new version of Wordpress.

How to update to Wordpress 2.8

In most cases, especially if your version of Wordpress was installed via Fantastico, you should see a yellow banner notifying you of the available upgrade at the top of your Dashboard when you next login to your Wordpress admin area. Just click on the link that says “Please update now”. It’s recommended that you backup your database, theme and image files and any other files you may have uploaded. Then choose on of the 2 options for upgrading. “Upgrade Automatically” in the one I choose, it’s faster and simpler than the download and manual upgrade.
